Adding Fermented Foods

Fermented foods… How many of you enjoy fermented foods? I think I can thank my mom and her German side for introducing me to ferments at a young age. Sauerkraut was a staple in our home, as well as liverwurst and many other tasty German treats. So when my Trim Healthy Mama coach told me that the key to fixing my gut was fermented food and drinks, I was all too happy to oblige.

Fermented Foods:

Of course I LOVE sauerkraut! I really love the Kraut brand that can be found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. I’ve also added fermented pickles. I thought for sure I’d love these. They are not available at any of my local grocery stores, so I ordered some online. Let’s just say it’s a love/hate relationship. I LOVE the good they are doing for my stomach, I don’t really love the taste. I did get 2 different types and I like the garlic better than the dill, but I will choke down all of them because … well, 1) I paid for them, and 2) again, the good they are doing in my gut. I eat one pickle, and a small portion of sauerkraut each day.

Fermented Drinks:

I have also just added homemade kefir. The benefits of HOMEMADE kefir WAY out weighs the store bought, and it tastes much better. I bought kefir grains and they are still new and “waking up” but in 2 days, I’ll have kefir of my very own. A great intro to kefir by my very own THM coach, Charity! Check it out! She does a great job telling all of the benefits! And lastly, I’ve added kombucha. I was a little scared to try it, but boy am I glad I did. It is SO delicious! I try to drink kefir (in a smoothie) and have at least 1 kombucha daily.

These secret foods have really turned my stomach around quickly.

Here are 10 of the best reasons to include them in your diet:

  1. Boosts Gut Health – Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which help balance the gut microbiome, improving digestion and overall gut health.
  2. Enhances Nutrient Absorption – Fermentation breaks down food, making nutrients more bioavailable, meaning your body can absorb vitamins and minerals more efficiently.
  3. Supports Immune Function – A healthy gut is directly linked to a stronger immune system, as beneficial bacteria help fight off harmful pathogens.
  4. Aids Digestion – The natural enzymes produced during fermentation help break down food, reducing bloating, gas, and other digestive issues.
  5. May Improve Mental Health – The gut-brain connection means a healthy microbiome can contribute to better mood, reduced stress, and even help with anxiety and depression.
  6. Helps Manage Weight – Fermented foods may help regulate appetite and metabolism, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight.
  7. Supports Heart Health – Some fermented foods, like kimchi and kefir, may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, benefiting cardiovascular health.

  9. May Help Balance Blood Sugar – Fermented foods can aid in regulating blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for people with diabetes or insulin resistance.
  10. Promotes Longevity – Many cultures that consume fermented foods regularly, like in Japan and Korea, are known for their longevity and overall health.
